California has numerous formal acts in statute. Government Code Title 1, Division 4, Chapter 9.9 provides the California Golden Shield Act, which is contained in Sections 3410 to 3412. Chapter 9.9 was added in 2009 by Chapter 462. Section 3410 names the act.
Section 3411 requires the Governor to annually award, and present in the name of the State of California, a Golden Shield Award of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to the next of kin of, or immediate family members of, every public safety officer who, while serving in any capacity under competent authority, has been killed in the line of duty in that year.
Section 3412 defines the terms “public safety officer” and “law enforcement officer.”
